Mel gives presentations to companies and camera clubs and co-created and conducted an annual photography workshop held at Lake Quinault Lodge in the Olympic rainforest. He has been a team teaching site-photographer for Osher Institute. Nature and macro photography are his primary styles, yet he has the ability to create exquisite images within virtually all styles.
Mel's interest in photography started in the early 70's photographing rodeo events and learning aerial photography. He increased his experience with SLR cameras while visiting Japan, the Philippines, and Korea. Mel helped American and Japanese companies establish photography departments for product photography used in equipment manuals and training programs. While residing in Japan, he taught photography to Japanese employees; and now in Oregon, currently provides training for a Japanese-American photography group.
Janell Huffman
Janell's many years of experience in photography began with film SLR cameras in college. During her career in education, she's studied with well-known American and International photographers and has taken numerous photography classes and workshops. Her experiences have continually progressed to include darkroom work, video and digital cameras, and editing software. A former community college instructor, Janell has extensive experience communicating with and training adults.
In addition to co-creating and conducting the Annual Photography Workshop held at the historic Lake Quinault Lodge, she has been a team teaching site-photographer for Osher Institute. As a leader of Tomodachi-kai, a Portland area Japanese-American friendship group, she established their photography club. Additionally, as a videographer, she edits and produces ballroom dance and travel videos. Landscape, travel, and nature photography interest her the most where she balances between "realistic" and "artistic" images.
Jim Nicholson
Jim's love of photography started early in life with a Brownie box camera, then moved to an instamatic and an Argus C3. In his early 20’s he purchased his first “professional” camera, a very used Nikon and got hooked. In 2003 he broke down and purchased a digital SLR. The hook was set.
In 2006, Jim said good-by to the corporate world and started to work toward being a professional photographer. Jim says, "It hasn’t happened overnight. I have had to really learn about my camera system, how to take pictures, what pictures to take, build a portfolio, and so forth. The work is ongoing." He considers himself self-taught, yet didn’t do it alone. "I have been fortunate to have had some very good help along the way. From all the authors of all those books I have read on the subject to some very helpful instructors (and students), all have had a hand in tweaking and fine tuning my work."
Jim loves the challenge of capturing landscapes, seascapes, waterfalls, flora and fauna in all its diversity and grandeur. I also enjoys photographing the grit and beauty of urban landscapes and life and is involved in sports and event photography. Check out Jim's website: www.wahkeenaphoto.com
